Biker Movies of 1980s

CHiPs (pilot & TV)
1977-83 CHiPs  Erik Estrada, Larry Wilcox
“The adventures of two California Highway Patrol motorcycle officers.”
The return of motorcycles to Television continues into the 1980s. Was brought back later..
Silver Dream Racer

1980 UK  Silver Dream Racer David Essex
“A young hot-headed motorbike enthusiast inherits the prototype for an incredibly fast machine which was designed by his brother...” Internet Movie Database
Good racing film and glad I bought so could see both English rather than just the American endings- so different that changes the entire film experience.

1980 Feb  Spetters
“A dutch film, post-Saturday Night Fever, which portrays the lives of three young men who are amateur dirt-bike motorcycle racers...” Internet Movie Database
Strange sexual drama with racing theme

1980 May  Kuruizaki sanda rodo  aka Crazy Thunder Road
“Japan's one and only crazy biker flick!” Internet Movie Database Actually just the first from Japan but like most very hard to find. "Focusing on the internal conflicts within the Mabiroshi biker gang, set in motion when their leader Ken opts out of the frontline to settle down for a life of domestic bliss with his girlfriend Noriko, the story unfolds almost as a series of fragmented image sequences, its manga-influenced stylistic origins rendered more obvious in scenes such as a muted bar room heart-to-heart as the resigned leader communicates to his girlfriend tacitly in a series of speech bubbles in the form of textual intertitles".Midnight Eye Review
Hog Wild

June 1980 Hog Wild Canadian  “In this uninspired attempt at teen comedy, Tim has returned home in disgrace as far as his dad is concerned — he was expelled from his military academy. The next thing Tim knows he is fighting off a gang of bikers that are terrorizing the high schoolers, and worse yet, he is falling for "The Bull's" girlfriend. The Bull, whose name belies, of all things, an okay guy underneath all that leather and severely mangled diction, is the leader of the bikers.”
At first hard to believe would happen at high school, especially since some of gang a lot older. Silly COMEDY but grab a six pack and enjoy.

Any Which Way You Can
Dec. 1980 Any Which Way You Can Clint Eastwood "Philo takes part in a bare knuckle fight - as he does - to make some more money than he can earn from his car repair business. He decides to retire from fighting, but when the Mafia come along and arrange another fight, he is pushed into it. A motorcycle gang and an orangutan called Clyde all add to the 'fun'" IMDb The Black Widow MC return as the bumbling bikers. Bike-flick star William Smith is his fight opponent.

1980 Take It to the Limit documentry  “a peek into the life of motorcycle riders and racers of the era.The film covers speedway, desert racing, road racing, hill climb, grass track, drag racing, trials, sidecars, dirt track and motocross in the 1970s."

1981 For Your Eyes Only   Roger Moore
“Agent 007 is assigned to hunt for a lost British encryption device and prevent it from falling into enemy hands."

Top 10 Movie Motorcycle Chases HONORABLE MENTION Ski chase For Your Eyes Only 1981,

1981 Apr Knightriders  By George Romero Knightriders may well be the only cycle flick ever to be played out in suits of armor. A hardcase motorcycle gang led by Ed Harris has found itself a neat money-making gimmick. Dressed as the knights of the round table, the cyclists pick up a few bucks at local "renaissance" fairs, selling handicrafts made by the more talented members of the gang. Harris' great rival is Tom Savini, who has his own band of "black knights." Keep an eye out for a chucklesome unbilled bit by novelist Stephen King.” -

TV Oct 1981 Return of the Rebels TV movie Barbara Eden, Don Murray, Jamie Farr, Patrick Swayze "An aging motorcycle gang assemble for a 25-year reunion to help out former member Mary Beth, a widowed operator of a popular campground which is being threatened by a band of arrogant groupies." IMDb -
Definately a made for TV movie by style and cast but enjoyable, yet predictable, to see bikers in better light. Made me remember the Harley video where the rider gathers more as goes. Patrick Swayze is the bad boy leader of the van teen gang.
Nomad Riders

1981 Nomad Riders IMDb
“In this low-low budget knock-off of the "Road Warrior" films, a courageous loner takes on those who killed his family in a desolate, futuristic world.”

Mad Max 2 - Road Warrior
1981 (US May 1982) Mad Max 2: Road Warrior Mel Gibson "A former police officer is now a lone wanderer, traveling through a devasted Australia after a nuclear war looking for the now-priceless fuel of petrol. He lives to survive and is none too pleased when he finds himself the only hope of a small group of honest people running a remote oil refinery. He must protect them from the bike gang that is terrorizing them whilst transporting their entire fuel supply to safety." IMDb Much more futuristic that original, more of a budget on this one for vehicles and costumes but looks like a Halloween shop was used for that
1981 1982 1983 1981 Aces Go Places aka Mad Mission Hong Kong
1982 Aces Go Places 2 aka Mad Mission 2
1983 Aces Go Places 3 Our Man from Bond Street

Silent Rage

Apr 1982 Silent Rage IMDb “Chuck Norris, six-time World Karate Champion, stars in his first suspense film as the tough, street-fighting sheriff of a small Texas town terrorized by a psychotic killer. … Norris displays fighting brilliance as he single-handedly routs a dozen brutal bikers from a truck stop hangout, while revealing a warm and sexy side when he rekindles an old romance with Alison Halman (Toni Kalem), a researcher at the institute. Excitement, horror, and romance prevail as Norris combats the killer.” Sony web site. More true to life story, even has flashing bike babes

1982 First Blood   Sylester Stallone
“A Vietnam Veteran uses his combat skills against the lawman of a small town when they arrest and abuse him."

Grease 2

June 1982 Grease 2   Maxwell Caulfield, Michelle Pfeiffer
“An English student at a 1960's American high school has to prove himself to the leader of a girls' gang whose members can only date greasers.” Internet Movie Database Where the original Grease just had the JD leather and cars, the squeal actually has T-birds as bikers with a rival gang, the Pink Ladies as Biker babes, and the Hero as the mystery biker. This is THE biker musical!

The Loveless

Sept 1982 The Loveless   Willem Dafoe “... Dafoe plays Vance, a stoic, leather-clad biker who rides into a small Southern town and to wait for some other bikers. Their plan is to travel on to Daytona for some racing, but they have to stick around the little truck stop town for a while to get one of their bikes repaired. Vance flirts a bit with Augusta (Liz Gans), a widowed waitress. She's the only local who's friendly to him and his gang. …, and the day ends with violence.” -

1982 TRON
Jeff Bridges stars as a brilliant software engineer who hacks into his former employer's computer system and soon finds himself sucked into an astounding virtual world, where he becomes a player in a gladiatorial video game.

The classic Science Fiction use of motorcycle vision

Dec 1982 Timerider: the Adventure of Lyle Swann  Fred Ward
“Lyle, a motorcycle champion is traveling the Mexican desert, when he find himself in the action radius of a time machine...” Internet Movie Database
Since bike films are often compared to Westerns, this is an interesting film, an off road motorcycle in the wild west by way of time travel.  Was hard to find but a good film worth the search for SciFi and biker fans.

The New Barbarians/Warriors of the Wasteland
Warriors of the Wasteland

1982 Warriors of the Wasteland  aka Nuovi barbari, IThe New Barbarians Fred Williamson “Two mercenaries help wandering caravans fight off an evil and aimless band of white-clad bikers after the nuclear holocaust.” Internet Movie Database
Really not much bikes in this spaghetti SciFi – glad was a $1 DVD, cheaper than renting.

Burst City (Japan Bakuretsu toshi )

1982  Bakuretsu toshi  English Burst City Japanese
“a futuristic tale of chaos and anarchy driven by an energetic punk-rock soundtrack and set in a bleak future where nuclear-power-plant protesting punk rockers clash with riot police and yakuza” English subtitles don't help make sense of the story. Started with a bike gang then like a music video, SM sex movie, JD punk racers (bikes there too), sci-fi weirdness and all bouncing back and forth. The camera work may make you sick if the movie doesn't.

1982 MegaForce
"Story about a rapid deployment defense unit that is called into action whenever freedom is threatened." - Wikipedia
Warlords of the 21st Century
aka Battletruck
New Zealand 1982 Warlords of the 21st Century aka Battletruck

Suddenly across the countryside comes Colonel Straker, ruthlessly smashing and enslaving each community underneath him with his armored battletruck. (Zombie) Aftermath

1982  The Aftermath aka Zombie Aftermath(Netflix) “Two astronauts return to earth ("a few miles off the coast of Los Angeles") to find that it has been destroyed by nuclear war. L.A. has been taken over by Cutter and his gang of outlaw bikers (straight out of the 70s with bell bottoms and everything).” IMDbLow budget SciFi with mutants, but this gang has no leathers, patches, nor bikes so not sure why IMDB has biker gang.  Brand new shiny Jeeps seem out of place. On Netflix as Zombie Aftermath - not really Zombies either.

Valley of Cycle Sluts

1982 Valley of the Cycle Sluts
"A gang of biker chicks kidnaps a tough guy cop as revenge for the arrest of their motor-head boyfriends, and punish him with a sexy brand of retribution."R
So we have seven biker sluts wanting revenge on the ex-drug cop who busted or killed their drug dealig bikers. Between the sequences of how he did that, the girls bump and grind down to topless as they whoever got him hard would be the one to kill him. Comedy relief is the old man spying on the whole thing and his corny lines. The budget was low

1990: Bronx Warriers

Apr 1982 1990: Bronx Warriors
“In a post-apocalyptic New York City, a policeman infiltrates the Bronx, which has become a battleground for several murderous street gangs.” IMDb
Another spaghetti SciFi with one of the gangs on bikes.
The lead is a pretty boy with one of the strangest walks I've ever seen in a movie.

1983 Escape From the Bronx aka Bronx Warriors 2 aka Fuga dal Bronx
“A rag-tag group of people must fight extermination squads amid their ruined city."
Survival Zone 1983  Survival Zone
“In a post-nuclear holocaust world, roving bands of motorcycle gangs attack ranchers to try to take over their land”
1983  2019: After the Fall of New York
"After a nuclear war, society breaks down into two groups, the evil Euraks and the rebel Federation. A mercenary named Parsifal is hired by the Federation to infiltrate New York City, which is controlled by the Euraks, to rescue the only fertile woman left on Earth."
Rumble Fish

Oct 1983  Rumble Fish  Matt Dillion, Mickey Rourke, Dennis Hopper, Nicolas Cage, William Smith  “Rusty James is the leader of a small, dying gang in an industrial town. He lives in the shadow of the memory of his absent, older brother -- The Motorcycle Boy. His mother has left, his father drinks, school has no meaning for him and his relationships are shallow. He is drawn into one more gang fight and the events that follow begin to change his life.” IMDb
Only thing biker is the name of Mickey Rourke’s role - The Motorcycle Boy - and short scenes of him riding.  More fun was to see biker vet William Smith as a cop.

racing 1983 or 1984   Space Riders
In the 1970s, Barry Sheene was the superstar of superbike motorcycle racing. In England, his home country, he was treated like royalty and was even made an "MBE" - Member of the British Empire." He won more 500cc GPs and 750 races than anyone during the period 1975-82 including 3 World Championships. The movie is a fictionalized but entertaining account of his career. Lots of racing and 170 mph crashes along with an insight into his personal life (his wife, Stephanie McClean also appears.) Also an insight into negotiations with Japanese sponsors." HondaHog

Streets of Fire

gangJune 1984 Streets of Fire Michael Paré, Diane Lane, Willem Dafoe, Rick Moranis “Rock and Roll singer is taken captive by a motorcycle gang in a strange world that seems to be a cross of the 1950's and the present or future. Her ex-boyfriend returns to town and to find her missing and goes to her rescue.”
A 80s version of the one man against biker gang with lots of rock n Roll.  Willem Dafoe again as a psycho biker and seems perfect for the role.

1984 Purple Rain Prince “A young musician, tormented by an abusive situation at home, must contend with a rival singer, a burgeoning romance and his own dissatisfied band as his star begins to rise. imdb Prince rode a purple bike read about this customized Honda CM400A twin-cylinder starter bike that was notable for its low seat height and its automatic two-speed transmission in articles by Maxim and BOLDRIDE

“A cyborg is sent from the future on a deadly mission. He has to kill Sarah Connor, a young woman whose life will have a great significance in years to come. Sarah has only one protector - Kyle Reese - also sent from the future.”
Sarah rides a scooter and there is one chase with Arnold on a bike, but not as much as in the sequel.

1984 Raw Courage aka Courage IMDb
“A 72-mile marathon turns into a fight for survival as three men are hunted by a gang of motorcycle commandoes armed to kill.”

1984 Warrior of the Lost World " This sci-fi adventure is set in a distant future wherein the scorched, irradiated Earth is run by the tyrannical Omega Force until a courageous motorcycle-riding maverick shows up to stop him. "

Gene himself crashes into Bunny, a sweet neighbor with a boyfriend that almost ran over him the first day they met." IMDb A good coming of age film, where the cool guy rides a bike and it works as part of plot. Better and more bike action that Lords of Flatbush of life in the the 50s where biker seems popular theme.

Mar. 1985  Mask   Cher, Sam Elliott, Eric Stoltz, Laura Dern
“Rusty Dennis is the mother of Rocky, a seriously deformed but extremely intelligent and emotionally warm child. Rusty is a no-nonsense mother whose wild lifestyle is often at odds with her tenderness and protectiveness towards Rocky. When it is stolen, he is send on a wild cross country adventure after a fortune teller tells him his bicycle is in the basement of the Alamo. "even comedian Pee-Wee Herman stumbled into a biker hangout ... emerging unscathed after he earns the respect of a biker gang for his dedication to his bicycle and the road" p.91 Two Wheels, Two Reels

Savage Dawn

and another

1985 Savage Dawn George Kennedy, Karen Black

Texas Gladiators 2020

1985 Texas Gladiators 2020 aka Anno 2020- I gladiatori del futuro

IMDb -
Dirt Bike Kid

Nov.1985 The Dirt Bike Kid Peter Bilingsley
“When his mother sends Jack off with money to buy groceries, he comes home with a magic supercharged dirt bike instead. His mother is furious, but when Jack uses the magic bike to save the local hot dog stand from the clutches of corrupt big business, he becomes the town hero”
One film I remember seeing long ago but unable to find to see again.

1985 Restless Natives USA Sept 1986 "Two lads in Edinburgh embark on a non-violent spree of robberies. They dress up in clown masks and act as modern highwaymen, robbing coach loads of tourists in the highlands. In the process they become folk heroes to the locals".
Quirky and fun film with them using a motorbike to do robberies. Funny scene with Japanese bike makers trying to cash in that they are using their brand of bikes in robberies.

1986 May Cobra Sylvester Stallone “City cop is on the trail of a serial killer. Loaded with action and violence. Stallone fans will love this Rambo-like movie with Stallone on the chase instead of the run.” Started with a robber who rode in first scene. Thought I had read that there was a biker gang, but just the psycho group riding to the final ambush on bikes.  Lots of bike stunts and action there. And at the end Syl and Brigette hop a Harley and ride into the credits in Western style.

Eat the Peach

Ireland 1986 Eat the Peach “Two hard-luck friends in rural Ireland, suddenly unemployed, are inspired by a scene in Elvis Presley's movie Roustabout and decide to build a ``wall of death'' (a huge wooden cylinder in which they ride their motorcycles in a circus like stunt). Can fame and fortune be far behind? Uniquely dour Irish sensibility permeates this uneven but engaging little film about hopes and dreams--even cockeyed ones like these. Director Ormrod and producer John Kelleher based their script on a true story.”

May 1986 Top Gun Tom Cruise, Kelly McGillis "Maverick is moved up in the standings and sent to the Top Gun Naval Flying School. There he fights the attitudes of the other pilots and an old story of his father's death in combat that killed others due to his father's error. Maverick struggles to be the best pilot, stepping on the toes of his other students and in a different way to Charlie, a civilian instructor to whom he is strongly attracted." IMDB
Probably the best ad for Sports bikes with it's "Need For Speed". Cruise goes on to use bikes for action in Mission Impossible and Knight and Day (2010)

July 1986  Vamp Chris Makepeace “Two fraternity pledges go to a sleazy bar looking for strippers to entertain their college friends. They have problems with transportation, Biker gangs, and worst of all, the staff of the bar, all of whom seem to be vampires, with Grace Jones playing the head vampire”
Biker Gangs?  What film was that reviewer watching?  A gang, sure, but does denim jackets with a patch make you a biker?  No bikes in this film at all, maybe too cheap.

The Majorettes

July 1986  The Majorettes
“A hooded psycho is murdering high-school girls. A devil-worshiping, drug-dealing biker gang is suspected”
I saw no biker gang watching this one so I wonder what film this reviewer watched.

Eye of Tiger

1986 Nov.  Eye of the Tiger  William Smith, Gary Busey “Buck, a former Vietnam veteran/ex-con recently released from the state prison. He returns to the small Midwest town where he grew up only to discover the place overrun by a large motorcycle gang bent on causing trouble. When the bikers murder his wife and traumatize his young daughter, Busey, with the help from a fellow Vietnam vet, as well as his former cell-mate, a drug kingpin living in Miami, Buck arms himself to the teeth and wages a war against the motorcyclists to destroy them once and for all’ imdb.comAgain one man stands up to a “biker gang”  - this time a large military like drug gang on dirt bikes lead by a bald William Smith. This is more action than true biker flick.

Danger Zone
1986 or 87 The Danger Zone "Six girls are on their way to Las Vegas to sing in a TV competition, but when their car breaks down, their only choice is to walk to a town they see in the distance. IMDB - "An empty desert road, a group of frightened women in a broken-down bus, and a brutal drug-running motorcycle gang. Lurid, exploitational violence ensues." The Wade Olsen series went to IV.

She is sought by a moronic gang of motorcyclists which has been murdering and raping at will. IMDb - . Not 1%ers but punks on dirt bikes, with temp tags no less. Nice bike cover art on one release (middle image)

1987 Feb. Mannequin  Andrew McCarthy, Kim Cattrall“Jonathan Switcher is a young artist. He just doesn't seem to last in any job he does. But when he builds a mannequin, he makes it so perfect, he falls in love with it. …. Later the mannequin comes to life as Emmy, who was an ancient Egyptian living in the year 2514BC.” IMDb.comOk, the hero just rides a motorcycle for funny scenes of the mannequin on the bike.  It is not a true bike film but good to see a bike in a mainstream film.

Winners Take All

1987 Feb. Winners Take All
“After Billy Robinson (Robert Krantz) finds success as a professional motorcycle racer, he returns to his hometown where he faces adulation and jealousy as a result of his success. 1987 Feb. Cyclone  Heather Thomas
“a brave young woman must deliver a specially designed, top-secret super-destructo armored motorcycle that runs on oxygen to the US military after the man assigned to deliver it, her lover, is murdered by enemy agents.”
Not bad for a low budget film and Thomas is good to look at too.

Warlords of Hell
1987 Warlords From (of) Hell

And so too do certain double-dealing members of the police squad pursuing him.” 1988 Won several Gemini Awards

Motorcycle Diaries Documentary on Female Riders
1987 Motorcycle Diaries Documentary on Female Riders "Produced by two women motorcyclists, this video interviews women involved in both amateur and professional motorcycle sports, including drag, sidecar and road racing, hill climbing, and motocross competition. They also meet with motorcycle clubs such as Women on Wheels, the Lady Hawks, and the Christian Motor-Cyclists Association, and participants in charity rides such as the Ride for Breast Cancer Research. In addition to examining safety issues, the attitudes of men toward women cyclists, and the participation of handicapped riders, the video reveals the competitive thrill and recreational enjoyment that women derive from motorcycling"
Virgins From Hell

1987 Virgins From Hell (Indonesia) IMDb "A chaste all-girl biker gang vows vengeance on the drug lord that did them wrong in this kinky Asian exploitation film. The gang goes after Mr. Tiger for selling drugs to kids, but instead, he gains the upper hand and holds the biker chicks captive, using them as guinea pigs in his aphrodisiac experiments conducted with the help of his sadistic lesbian associate. But Mr. Tiger soon learns he's no match for the virginal vigilantes."
If you are into bad acting, bad effects, and Asian girls in leather mini-skirts with high boots riding dirt bikes, then this is a guilty campy pleasure. Get out the beer and enjoy.

1988 (July 2001 USA) Akira Japanese animation

The Punisher

1989 The Punisher Dolph Lundgren First film version, others no bike
“This is an adaptation of a popular, violent Marvel Comics series about a character who's a frontier-style vigilante in modern-day urban America. Believed to be killed in the explosion, Castle has gone underground, building a subterranean lair in the sewer system and vengefully assassinating various criminals, wracking up an impressive body count of 125 slain in five years. Castle's former partner rightly suspects that he knows the true identity of the motorcycle-riding avenger dubbed "the Punisher." ….. Filmed in Australia, this low-budget action thriller did not get a theatrical release in the U.S., instead going directly to video.” Some bike riding, especailly in the sewers but not enough to really put this past use of motorcycle just for action.
