1970s

2010s
While the biker film genre started in the 1950s with The Wild One, it was the actual post war use of motorcycles by ex-servicemen and formation of motorcycle clubs that was the seed.  The changes in society at this time brought out the changes in film.  The 1950s bikers were mild rebels or delinquents.  The psychedelic sixties brought even more changes into our culture, subcultures, and film making.  Movies got more violent, sexy, with drugs, just like America.  The major studios changed and more independents got involved with low budget films for drive-ins aimed at the youth. Many reviewers say the biker film took over the Western genre with similar plots. We have biker gangs, few are ok folk, but mostly psychos with in-fighting, violence, sex, drugs, rape, town terrorizing, revenge, and rock n roll.  Also have town folks or cops that are scared or prejudiced.  Lots of drug use and slang, often the bikers are given hippie characteristics – how true was that?  But the hippies are often included.  These films have much music/video montages to pad the story, especiall the falling in love scenes. The British also had their biker films but without the “Western” background more social comment or SciFi/Horror edge.
American International  Pictures made several of the Avalon/Funicello beach movies with the bumbling Eric Von Zipper and his Rats and Mice MC.   Good mindless fun and one of few times bikers are humorous in movies.

Biker Movies of 1960s

Some People

1962 UK Some People  June 1964 (USA) IMDb “... a trio of juvenile delinquents in Bristol who lose their driver's licenses after a 100 mile-per-hour accident on their motorcycles.… they begin to turn their lives around, encouraged all the while by a hopeful adult community.” Allmovie.com

(These are) The Damned

1962 UK These Are the Damned  1965 US The Damned IMDb “… American visiting England, where he meets a woman …  but there's a considerable obstacle in their budding romance: Joan's brother King, the leader of a violent pack of motorcycle rockers. .. attack Simon, take his money, and leave him stranded. …, another run-in … to discover a cave that holds a terrible secret: a group of strange, cold-blooded children who were the products of experiments gone wrong. The children were genetically engineered to survive a nuclear war, and, as a result, they are radioactive enough to kill anyone who comes in close contact with them.” Allmovie.com

The Great Escape - great bike ride

1963 July 4 The Great Escape  Steve McQueen IMDb
It may be a stretch to consider this great war film a “biker movie” but is included as has the great Steve McQueen motorcycle escape scene by stunt rider Bud Ekins.
I remember as kid this movie airing yearly and sure that might have influenced many others too. I see a recent DVD release now has cover with Steve McQueen on the bike.

Beach Party
August 1963 Beach Party Robert Cummings, Dorothy Malone, Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, Harvey Lembeck IMDb.com
The first of the five official American-International "Beach Party" movies, all directed by William Asher and all very popular. Anthropology Professor ,,,studying the sex habits of teenagers. The surfing teens ...don't have much sex but they sing, battle the motorcycle Rats and Mice led by Eric Von Zipper (Harvey Lembeck) and dance to Dick Dale and the Del Tones. Look for Vincent Price in a surprise cameo.
The Leather Boys

1964 Jan UK  The Leather Boys

Bikini Beach

"Millionaire Harvey Huntington Honeywagon III (Keenan Wynn) tries to prove to his colleague Vivian Clements (Martha Hyer) that his chimp, Clyde, is more intelligent than American teenagers. Meanwhile Dee Dee (Annette Funicello) is torn between Frankie (Frankie Avalon) and British recording star, the Potato Bug (Avalon). Eric Von Zipper (Harvey Lembeck) shows up to aid Harvey's anti-teen campaign. Don Rickles plays Big Drag and Boris Karloff shows up in a gag bit part". IMDb.com

Meanwhile, Aunt Wendy's shady neighbor and his gang concoct a scheme to part Aunt Wendy from her cash. Also meanwhile, the local motorcycle gang wants revenge on the volleyball players for... getting footprints on their beach. Somehow all the subplots come together at the pajama party". IMDb.com
Roustabout

1964 Nov 11  Roustabout
"Elvis is a leather-jacketed biker who's fired from a singing engagement after getting into a fight with a group of college toughs. While riding his cycle to the next gig, an irate dad runs him off the road when he flirts with his daughter.”  IMDb.com
Elvis was a big Harley fan but they have him on a Honda to show one of the “nice people”, not a big bad biker. Rare to seeing him ride on film, also Stay Away Joe.

Beach Blanket Bingo
Apr 1965 Beach Blanket Bingo Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello, Harvey Lembeck
"In the fourth of the highly successful Frankie and Annette beach party movies, a motorcycle gang led by Eric Von Zipper kidnaps singing star Sugar Kane managed by Bullets, who hires sky-diving surfers Steve and Bonnie from Big Drop for a publicity stunt. With the usual gang of kids and a mermaid named Lorelei". IMDb.com
How to Stuff a Wild Bikini
July 1965 How to Stuff a Wild Bikini Avalon, Funicello, Harvey Lembeck
"The last of the Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello beach movies. Frankie, on naval-reserve duty in Tahiti, doesn't trust Dee Dee to stay faithful, so he hires Bwana (Buster Keaton), a witch doctor, to help. Bwana conjures up a floating bikini, "stuffs" it with Cassandra (Beverly Adams), and sends her to distract advertising executive Ricky (Dwayne Hickman) from Dee Dee. Watch for Elizabeth "Samantha" Montgomery as Bwana's witch-daughter to pop up and twitch". IMDb.com
MotorPsycho

Motor Psycho

1965 Aug  Motor Psycho Directed by Russ Meyer  “Three bad boy motorcyclists get kicks raping other people's women and generally being a nuisance. When they rape a veterinarian's wife, he takes exception and pursues them,”  IMDb - allmovie.com With the hype in The Big Book of Biker Films and others, had to see this one. Has the Meyer's buxom babes, and familiar rape/killing plot, but "motorcyclists" on SCOOTERS??

Ghost in the Invisible Bikini
Apr 1966 The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini Tommy Kirk, Harvey Lembeck
"Hiram Stokley is a recently deseased corpse who learns that he has 24 hours to mastermind and perform one good deed in order to get into Heaven, so he enlists the help of his long deceased girlfriend Cecily, a ghost, to stop his greedy lawyer, Reginald Ripper and his henchman J. Sinister Hulk from claiming his estate for themselves ..., while dopey biker Eric Von Zipper and his Malibu Rat Pack bikers also get involved in pursuing Yolanda for a share of the estate". IMDb
The Wild Angels

July 1966  The Wild Angels Peter Fonda, Nancy Sinatra, Bruce Dern, Diane Ladd
Michael J. Pollard, directed by Roger Corman
When they both botch their attempt to retrieve Loser's stolen bike, Loser ends up in the hospital. When the Angels bust him out, he dies, and they bury him. Nancy Sinatra plays Mike, Blues' "old lady" and Diane Ladd plays Loser's wife (Dern's real-life wife at the time). The plot is basically a buildup to the last half-hour of the film in which Loser's funeral becomes another wild party." IMDb
One of the "classic" biker flims even if seems so low budget and dated.

The Girls From Thunderstrip

1966 The Girls from Thunder Strip
William Bonner, Casey Kasem “A vicious gang of murderous bikers goes up against a trio of beautiful bootlegging sisters.”  IMDb.com

The Love Merchant

1966 The Love Merchant IMDb
"Kendall Harvey III is a wealthy and jaded playboy ... Click is a biker who wants to make a fast buck … Click spots Harvey in a go-go club; hoping to make a good impression with the wealthy socialite, Click offers to introduce him to some attractive and willing women,” allmovie.com  Few scenes of him riding, just another use of making a biker as a villain
with little bike action of any meaning.

1966 or 1967 Outlaw MotorcyclesThe real name of the director was Titus Moede; his nom de film, Titus Moody, was lifted from a character who used to appear on the old Fred Allen radio show. Moede/Moody is the only credited participant, a docudrama about the California cycle scene. We are treated to an enactment of a biker wedding and a biker funeral, several staged sequences of wild parties, and endless shots of cycle races, both on and off the track. Despite the film's lurid title, nothing much really happens. The whole thing looks like a glorified home movie, which makes the hardcase types who appear seem endearingly childlike at times. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide" Allmovie.com * IMDb

The Acid Eaters

1967 The Acid Eaters The clock strikes five on a Friday afternoon, and a gang of part-time bohemians hop aboard their motorcycles and hit the highway looking for kicks.” allmovie.com  Because of the above this movie showed in a motorcycle search, while they do ride a lot in the movie, it is not a biker film but a drug film.  Seems the freedom of a bike leads to drugs and sex.  The group doesn’t do anything gang like except for robbing a cager, and wearing red shirts.  And those are off a lot during the film.  The girls are mostly topless so almost seems to be soft porn – fitting DVD is on Something Weird Video label.

Hellcats

1967 The Hellcats aka Biker Babes  Ross Hagan
“A cop goes undercover to avenge the death of his undercover cop brother in a drug-dealing gang, who evidently use more than they sell, and yet is still trusted by the mob to deal.” IMDb.com. One of the first female biker gangs.  Was featured and released on DVD as part the Mystery Science Theatre 2000.  They had the decency to include the original copy along with their commented one on DVD.

MSFT
Devil's Angels

1967 Apr  Devil’s Angels John Cassavetes
“An exiled band of Hell's Angels strike a bargain with the Sheriff of a local town, let them stay and the town is safe. But a local girl strays into their lair and sparks off a full scale Angel war.” IMDb.com First there are no Hell's Angels, they are the Skulls so as often another bad summary. Does have a common plot, the beat music and Sixties slang. The leader, John Cassavetes, is one of the not so bad guys, trying to find his way. At end he leaves the gang as they rampage the town.

Hell's Angels on Wheels

1967 June  Hells Angels on Wheels Jack Nicholson, Adam Roarke, Jack Starrett
“At first gas station attendant Poet is happy when the rockers gang "Hell's Angels" finally accepts him. But he's shocked when he learns how brutal they are - not even murder is a taboo to them. He gets himself in trouble when the leader's girlfriend falls in love with him ” IMDb.com  The “official” Hell’s Angels approved film. Still good today.

Born Losers (Billy Jack)

1967 Aug Born Losers Tom Laughlin, Jeremy Slate
“Billy Jack battles outlaw motorcycle gang in a small California beach town.” IMDb.com Introducing Billy Jack, and his martial arts, in one of the first Vigilante films and first in the Billy Jack series. A total Laughlin production in the classic style of High Noon - one man against the gang.

The Wild Rebels

1967 Sept Wild Rebels
Filmed in Jupiter FL “A stock car driver goes undercover as the wheel man for a motorcycle gang” IMDb.comThis one was so bad, I’m glad Mystery Science Theatre 2000 only had their comment version, even with that, I almost fell asleep.  What ever happened to the West Palm Fairgrounds raceway?  And was that the Jupiter Lighthouse?

Shanty Tramp

1967 Shanty Tramp
"A sleazy evangelist puts the move on a small town shanty tramp. Shes teases the leader of biker gang and rejects him when won't pay. She then makes a move on a local black kid, which later gets him killed after her drunken pappy walks in on them (she crys rape!). The confrontation between her and her pappy (after he learns it wasn't really rape) is unforgettable. She soon goes crawling back to the sleazy evangelist. Kind of an R-rated sleazy cross between Elmer Gantry and To Kill a Mockingbird. "

The Glory Stompers

1968 Jan The Glory Stompers Dennis Hopper, Casey Kasem, Chris Noel
“Chino is the tough leader of a motorcycle gang who starts off a war when he abducts and mistreats the leader of the enemy biker gang, Darryl, and his girlfriend Chris. Things get violent when Darryl comes back for revenge.” IMDb

Hells Chossen Few

1968 Hell’s Chosen Few William Bonner
“In this bargain basement biker film, a soldier returns from 'Nam and learns that his brother-the-biker has been accused of killing the boy friend of the sheriff's daughter and incarcerating. Believing his sibling innocent, the vet takes over the gang and roars off to find the truth.....” allmovie.com

The Angrey Breed
1968 The Angry Breed James MacArther, Jan Stirling, William Windom, Melody Patterson In Vietnam, aspiring actor Johnny Taylor is given a prize film script after saving the life of a Hollywood screenwriter. On his return, Johnny has trouble finding a studio that will let him play the lead until he saves producer Vance Patton's daughter Diane from a cycle-gang attack. The grateful father sends him to agent Mori Thompson, but Thompson wants the script for gang leader Deek Stacy. Deek and his agent feed Johnny LSD and drag him away to the dungeon during the producer's Halloween party. IMDb
Crazy Baby 1968 Crazy Baby   Youthful rebellion, European-style with music and motorcycles as the rockers battle the mods. Ricky Shayne is a sullen rock singer (from Liverpool, of course) who gets blamed for the death of a sexy groupie (she was actually stabbed by a biker rival). He flees to Italy where he meets up with various heathens, whores and hustlers.
Could this be Battaglia dei mods, La (1966)  aka "Crazy Baby" - Italy??
Savages From Hell

1968 Apr Savages From Hell aka Big Enough and Old Enough
“When the leader of a vicious motorcycle gang finds a farm worker's son flirting with his woman, he beats the boy senseless, then kidnaps the farm worker's daughter.” IMDb HIt is the biker that has the hots for the daughter cuses the conflict with son. Has migrant workers, beach parties, and swamp buggy races from Naples. Thought had that Florida look. Lists the "Outlaws MC" in credits but no patchs spotted. Actually not a bad plot regardless of the hokness. Something Weird DVD includes a 1960s Cypress Gardens documentary "the Greatest Show on Water".

The Savage Seven

1968 May The Savage Seven Robert Walker Jr., Adam Roarke
“Mad bikers storm through an Indian reservation just to have a good ol' time.” IMDb.
"This violent motorcycle gang drama finds the outlaws riding onto an Indian reservation to take over. A rival gang has other ideas. There are few likeable characters in this feature, the possible exception being Johnnie (Walker), and he is a convicted thief. Rock-guitar legend Duane Eddy plays off the seven, while Penny Marshall makes an early big screen appearance. a modern-day cowboys and Indians tale, only instead of horses, the outlaws ride motorcycles." allmovie.com.

Mini-Skirt Mob

1968 May  The Mini-Skirt Mob Ross Hagan, Harry Dean Stanton
“Driven by jealousy, the jilted leader of a female motorcycle gang instigates a sadistic reign of terror against her ex-lover and his new bride” IMDbCan’t believe this is in the Big Book of Biker Flicks.  Guess it was the being terrorized by people on bikes.  Rodeo cowboys and mini-skirt “go-go girls” on Triumphs and Hondas, not true bikers - so much for “you meet the nicest people on a Honda” slogan .

She Devils on Wheels

1968 May She-Devils on Wheels
“An all-female motorcycle gang, called 'The Maneaters' hold motorcycle races, as well as terrorize the residents of a small Florida town, and clash off against an all-male rival gang of hot-riders.” IMDbThis is so hokey you have to love it as the girls race to pick their studs. Has a big hot mama biker.
Short Subject "Biker Beach Party" about Aliens MC on "She-Devils on Wheels" DVD

Angels From Hell

1968 June  Angels From Hell Jack Starrett
“A destructive ex-motorcycle gang leader comes home from Vietnam to resume his life. His desire to form a powerful gang has the police running scared. But, will he succeed...” IMDb.
Not bad of a movie. The police as almost as bad as the bikers. Does have Bud Atlkins (did the famous Great Escape jump among other films) doing some stunts as a biker they chase.

Girl On a MotorCycle (Naked Under Leather)

1968 June  The Girl on a Motorcycle Aka La Motocyclette  (France) Naked Under Leather (USA) (reissue title)  Alain Delon, Marianne Faithful
“A married woman leaves her husband, zooms off on her motorcycle to see her lover, and crashes to her death while indulging in sexual reverie.” IMDb. While the fake ridng closeups of her riding are hokey (is she getting off?) I did associate with her voice over thoughts as rideng. My mind alos opens to thinking while riding.

Eastwood 1968 Oct Coogan's Bluff Clint Eastwood "Coogan, an Arizona cop, is sent to New York to collect a prisoner. Everyone in New York assumes Coogan is from Texas, much to his annoyance. To add to Coogan's problems the prisoner isn't ready, so he decides to cut a few corners. In the process the prisoner escapes, and Coogan is ordered home. Too proud to return home empty handed, Coogan sets out into the big city to recapture his prisoner" imdb.com Excellent motorccyel chase scene is one of best in action movies.
Run Angel Run

1969 Apr Run, Angel, Run William Smith, Valerie Starrett
“Angel, … exposing the inner workings of his gang, the magazine will pay him $10,000. Angel takes the offer, although it means he and his girlfriend must now go on the run from cyclists looking for revenge.” IMDb. Biker tries to go straight.  Mild biker action, only two rapes and one dead biker.  Good change of pace from the normal formula.  This was William Smith’s first film in long run of biker films.

Sidehackers

1969 May The Sidehackers aka Five the Hard Way Ross Hagan, Diane McBain
“Motorcycle racer Rommel seeks vengeance against JC, a madman who murdered the sidehacker's fiancee.” IMDb.com.
Re-released 1988 Sidehackers Mystery Science Theater 3000

Easy Rider
1969 June Easy Rider Peter Fonda, Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson
“Two counterculture bikers travel from Los Angeles to New Orleans in search of America.” IMDb. What else is there to say?  The ultimate Biker Movie – it made the American Film Institute’s top 100 Films of All Time.  Another with heavy drug influence and rock music especially Born to Be Wild. Definately the ultimate exploration film.

Easy Rider fan site
Satan's Sadists

1969 June Satan’s Sadists reissued as Nightmare Bloodbath  Russ Tamblyn, Robert Dix “The "Satans" are a very cruel biker gang led by Anchor. The gang goes to a diner in the middle of nowhere in the California desert where they begin to terrorize ...” IMDbFor a movie shot in ten days, this Al Adamson classic has fairly good production, good opening credits, and decent acting. I can see why some call it the Citizen Kane of Biker Movies (but then I never thought Citizen Kane deserved to be the number one AFI film). It is a mild gore with body count at 15.

Wild Wheels

1969  Aug  Wild Wheels Robert Dix, Casey Kasem
“A group of surfers use dune buggies to protect their beach from a gang of invading bikers.” IMDb.com A motorcycle gang fights a group of dune buggy enthusiasts for the right to occupy the Pismo Beach area. When the girlfriend of the buggy club's leader is raped, they retaliate and catch the bikers off guard during a drunken orgy. Graphic violence ensues. Don Epperson, Robert Dix, Casey Kasem and Terry Stafford are the more memorable names in this forgettable film which originally had an X-rating, but was later edited down to an R. allmovie.com

Sisters in Leather

1969 Sisters in Leather aka Sisters in Leatherette
“A husband is blackmailed by 3 lesbian bikers after they spot him having sex with another woman in a convertible. They then take the man's wife out for a picnic and some nude motorcycle riding.” IMDb..  I had to order this one from Something Weird!
Basic soft 60's porn material faintly as biker film.

Sinner's Blood

1969 Sinner’s Blood aka Hard Riders

“Bikers terrorize a small town.” IMDb.com
"Two sisters discover the joys of sex, rock music and narcotics when a biker gang comes to town in this drama." allmovie.com

Cycle Savages

1969 Sept  The Cycle Savages Bruce Dern, Casy Kasem
“The leader of a biker gang takes exception to an artist sketching them, so he makes plans to crush the artist's hands.” IMDb.com  Sex, drugs. Rape, and crime like in so many of this genre.  Produced by Casy Kasem with cameo as the gang leader’s pimp brother.

Hell's Angels 69

1969 Sept Hell’s Angels ’69 Sonny Barger, Tom Stern, Jeremy Slate
“Two brothers have a plan on how to rob the Ceasar's Palace in Las Vegas. They join a motorcycle gang and while the others are drinking and partying outside of town, they change their clothes and head off to rob the casino.” IMDb.com.  I’d have to say this is the Ocean’s Eleven of biker films.  Actuality, a pretty good story and production, and the bikers, in this case the Oakland Hell’s Angels, are not the bad guys.

Naked Angels

1969 Sept Naked Angels
“Mother has just got out of prison and wants to get revenge on the biker gang that put him there. He teams up with his old gang "The Angels" ...” IMDb.com

From the cover and poster art I should have know this was pure drive-in crap. But good riding scenes and nude babes.

The Ballad of Andy Crocker

1969-TV Nov  The Ballad of Andy Crocker   Lee Majors, Joey Heatherton
Made for TV movie. "A Viet Nam vet ex-scrambler returns home to find his girl married, his bike shop to be sold and future gone."  Good bike chase scene. IMDb
Seems the only thing he comes home to is his bikes. This movie stands the test of time, even more so with the recent return of Vets and how the Nam vets were treated.

The Babysitter
1969 The Babysitter "An assistant DA (George Carey) is prosecuting a biker for a vicious murder. The lawyer's home-life meanwhile is a wreck: The lawyer's home-life meanwhile is a wreck: He has a nagging, frigid wife and a newborn son, and his adult daughter is a lesbian. Things go from bad to worse, however, when he is unable to resist the charms of his seductive underage babysitter (Patricia Wymer). Meanwhile, the girlfriend of the biker befriends the prosecutor's daughter, hoping to get some photos of her with her lover so she can use them to blackmail the father. She really hits the jackpot though when she stumbles upon the man himself en flagrante with his babysitter mistress." .imdb.com . Written and directed by Tom Laughlin (of Billy Jack fame) under name of Don Henderson. This and the sequel are more realist of bikers.
Scream Free! 1969 Scream Free! aka Free Grass "Here's an "Easy Rider" - inspired plot with the combination of "West Side Story" stars. Richard Beymer falls in love with Lana Wood (sister Natalie wasn't available). They need cash so they agree to help Russ Tamblyn and his gang smuggle grass from Mexico to L.A. on motorcycles. When Beymer objects to narcotics agents being killed, his long-haired pal from the Jets puts LSD in his drink, tries to burn him alive, and has Lana kidnapped. No musical numbers, however. With Bing's son Lindsay Crosby, Joel's son Jody McCrea and deejay Casey Casem. Directed by Bill Brame ("The Cycle Savages"). imdb

He meets a kindred spirit in runaway bride Temple Brooks (Bonnie Bedelia) and soon the pair is off to New Orleans, searching for life's answers together.
